Network marketing in and of itself is a very simple concept, however, the promotion of a network marketing or MLM business is not easy. It takes work, and in some cases a thick skin to deal with not only rejection, but sometimes ridicule from people that have misconceptions about it.
With network marketing, overcoming the ever-so-popular “Is this one of those pyramid things?” objection is something that, unfortunately kills even what could have been a very good distributor before they ever really get any traction toward success. This is unfortunate because when most people ask this “distributor-killing” question, they usually don’t even know what a pyramid is as it relates to any kind of business. Yet, most distributors immediately get defensive about the entire issue.
If you’ve ever been a part of any MLM or Network Marketing company as a distributor, then you’ve probably heard those words at some point…or at least thought about saying it.
Now, a lot of “mentors”, “sponsors”, and even companies themselves never really address this issue the way it should be addressed, which is simply: the network marketing or MLM business is more about timing than it is the opportunity itself, regardless of how good it may be. This simply means, if you ask someone if they are open to taking a look at a business opportunity and they say “no” or “not really”, then why do so many distributors resort to forcing the opportunity on them at some level because “they are only trying to help that person”.
As the old saying goes: “The life preserver only works if the person drowning grabs it when it’s thrown to them!”
The point is this: MOVE ON!
If you play your cards right, then maybe….MAYBE….that person will become a distributor later. Worst case, they become a distributor for either another network marketing company or under someone else at your company. If you’ve continued to sort through as many people as you possibly could enroute to your goal, then it won’t matter anyway.
So, don’t force feed an opportunity down your best friend’s throat, don’t get defensive if they ask if it’s a pyramid or make fun of you for being a part of one. What’s more, and this is the most viable solution for most new distributors: don’t even talk to your friends and family about the opportunity, no matter how much you think they may need it or how much you “care” about them.
It’s really naive, but most distributors also fall into the trap of thinking (or being brainwashed to believe by their company or sponsor) that their company is not only the best, but in some cases the ONLY “real” opportunity to make money in the world today. MLM and Network Marketing are only one of millions of ways to make extra money and even fortunes in the world today.
Some people use MLM and network marketing as a springboard to delving into a lucrative career of public or motivational speaking, authoring books, investing in real estate, or numerous other things. In other cases, people have become successful in another area, THEN get into MLM as a supplement.
Regardless of how people get involved with MLM, it’s vital that it be treated as though you just invested $1,000,000 into it.
